I just saw an ad geared toward kids, and its tagline was "Get up and play an hour a day." That in and of itself was pretty sad. I remember when I was a kid how we couldn't wait to get home, finish our homework, and run outside. Winter was hell because we were cooped up inside. Now we have to come up with dopey little songs and catch phrases to get kids outside and interacting with other kids.
But the truly sad part of the ad was when an Internet address was given where kids could go to "get fun playtime ideas."
WTF?!?!
Has it gotten that bad? Do kids not know how to play outside? Make a mud pie? Look for bugs, worms, and other creepy crawlies under rocks and pieces of wood? Play fetch with the dog? Jump rope or hop scotch?
But then again, these kids have parents that have to drive three blocks to the grocery store.
::sigh::

Yeah what happened to the "good old days" when older siblings would find a branch and chase younger siblings (me) around for fun trying to wack them. No wonder I took up reading as a hobby. I did however spend a GREAT deal of time one summer with a box propped up on a stick with a string leading to me with birdseed inside, trying to be patient enough to capture a bird (never was, always pulled string too quick). Not sure what I would have done then, probably listened to bird trapped in dark box trashing about, thought about how it felt and burst into tears. Nevertheless, I think the box, stick, string is almost a universal childhood thing.
OR . . . you could have two girls (my sister and me) and two boys (my brother and our cousin) find sticks and chase each other around trying to whack each other to see if the boys or the girls could inflict more bruises. Oh, and did I mention we were all teenagers when we were doing this? No? Please disregard then. :-)
